I had the opportunity to run a workshop on Web 2.0 and Social Media at for the graduate Marketing Promotion and Communication class at Bentley in Waltham, MA yesterday. This was my first time on the Bentley campus, on a warm and sunny Spring afternoon, beautiful college.

The first part of the course was all about Web 2.0, what it is, technology, we looked at all kinds of sites and services and the second part we talked about social media identity.

Bentley Class

I borrowed Jeff Carvers social media toolkit idea and we did a rapid socializing exercise where everyone had a name tag, a blank tag and 40 stickers they had to go around tagging each other for 5 minutes. The goal was to use up all your tags. At the end of the tagging everyone got one big gold star and had to “star” their favorite person. It was an interesting experiment to see who ended up with the most tags and stars (I was the least popular participant).

It also demonstrated how other peoples opinion shape our perception of individuals and brands. The final lesson which I forgot to point out is it reinforces how important it is to participate. Not only to write blogs and read content but if you like something let others know; leave a comment, Digg the article, make it a favorite.

A really funny thing I learned was that 2 students fell for my April fools post about Microsoft’s brainwashing banner ads and wrote papers on it for this assignment. The credit for the actual prank goes to Amnesia Group in Austrailia. I hope they can still get full credit.

Special thanks to Professor Andy Aylesworth and Assistant Professor Lan Xia for having me, I had a great time. I was a bit concerned that all the nifty new Web sites and ideas would be old school for them but I was able to teach a thing or two.
